I Want To Go Back

I want to go back.
To rain drops on car windows,
And long drives to nowhere.
Red lights and doodles on fogged windows.

To discovering time
and waiting for it to pass.
Games that were only played once,
now lost with that time.

Sunny days and
being forced to go inside.
Begging and pleading
for 5 more minutes.

Blisters and monkey bars,
Pulled hair and bruised knees.
When we cried but minutes later,
we’d laugh, pain forgotten.

Late nights were rare
but precious.
Movie nights and sleepovers,
Avengers and Barbie.

When we were distressed heroes,
and valiant damsels.
Free to dream and to do,
never meant to be put into boxes.

I want to go back.
To when we lived
without critiques and insecurities.
When we believed
in magic and in ourselves.

I want to go back to when we were ourselves unapologetically.
